Who says you cannot be the weight you were when you married? Who says you cannot, in fact, be fitter at fifty than you were in your thirties? Are these facts? Or are they assumptions? Who imposed them upon us? We did! So, STOP!
What is your ideal?
You might firstly want to aim for a BMI of between 20 & 25. This is a very rudimentary measure and works on a population basis. Its not a bad start, though, if you have quite a journey to go.
I’m a bigger fan of measuring your metabolic age, where we compare muscle mass to fat mass. The amount of muscle you have directly impacts your metabolism. This can be done on special measuring scales but is also apparent in muscle mass increasing and fat mass decreasing in the body. The result of a lower metabolic age is good health! Such measures as glucose metabolism, blood pressure and smaller waist circumference are good indicators that you are on the right track to reverse ageing!
Can you achieve this at and after middle age?
Yes of course. But you will need to commit to a consistent approach to healthy eating, resistance training (you do not need to join a gym necessarily) and cardio fitness. You do not need to follow a gruelling regime, just a moderate one, consistently. Did I mention that you need to be consistent?
Herein lies the challenge. The quick-fixes of your younger years are no longer effective. Your body now requires consistent food intake (yes protein, but not ONLY protein). It further requires consistent exercise (every single week) and it needs consistent sleep. Regular sleep and adequate rest are when your repair cycle happens in the body. We are not aiming for burn-out here. We are aiming for building tissue, specifically muscle and bone.
Do I need to be extremely disciplined to achieve my target weight?
No. Discipline comes and goes. It may get you started, but it will rarely stick! Instead build good habits. Stack health eating habit, week on week. Stack exercise, hydration & sleep habits on top of that. I can teach you how. Start now. Address your own particular needs. One size does not fit all here!
